The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 46 Information and documentation is responsible for developing standars for the library community. Having developed ISO 28560-2 that supports RFID technology using 13.56 MHz protocols, attention was turned to address a solution for libraries choosing to adopt RFID technology using UHF protocols (860 MHz to 960 MHz). The UHF technology is favoured in some countries, and is a more recent technology that is widely adopted by different sectors.
ISO TS 28560-4:2014 Information and documentation -- RFID in libraries -- Part 4: Encoding of data elements based on rules from ISO/IEC 15962 in an RFID tag with partitioned memory was published in 2014. This standard now provides libraries with a choice of RFID technology. The standard supports ISO/IEC 18000-63 tags which has separately addressable memory areas. It specifies a set of mandatory and optional data elements that may be encoded on the RFID tag, defining which memory bank to use.
